Myth Buster Monday: Job Fairs are Just for Jobs

Myth: Job Fairs are just for jobs.

As you can probably guess, we are saying that this is NOT true. Of course landing a job is a potential benefit, but attending one of these events can provide even better opportunities than you may be able to imagine on the surface. For one, you should always consider a job fair as a networking opportunity, not only for you to meet companies, but also to network with other people in your field. Who knows, maybe they’ll need someone to back them up as a reference and will owe you a favor in return one day?

Another great way to look at a job fair is as a “chance to maximize your time, effort, and gas.” Now if that doesn’t sound like a catch, I don’t know what does. You have the chance to meet with many people in just one session, providing a plethora of potential opportunities without having to drive all around the city to do so. In the case that they want to interview you on the spot, you may also gain the advantage of removing some of the time from the application process.

Last but certainly not least, you can always use the fair as a way to make a good first impression on potential employers by dressing the part, being well prepared, and giving them the opportunity to match your face to your application.  So, next time a job fair rolls around with Career Services, stop by and take advantage- it can only help you!
