Dress for Success on a Budget

Dress for Success on a Budget

A well-budgeted, fashionable business wardrobe. Sound impossible? It’s not! A college budget can make having a nice outfit for interviews difficult, but here are a few tips to help you dress for success without emptying your wallet:

THRIFT SHOPS. I know, I know. “Thrift shops?? There’s no way I’ll find a nice suit in a thrift shop!” Well, you may not get lucky and find an entire suit and a shirt and tie to match, but thrift shops can be a great place to find those staple pieces of a business wardrobe without breaking the bank. Plus, a dry-cleaning bill is much less expensive than buying a brand new sports jacket off the rack.

ONLINE. Have some money to spend, but still don’t want to drop $400 on a nice suit? There are plenty of places online that sell good quality business clothing for a fraction of the cost. This option is great for both men (check out The Combatant Gentleman) and women (Overstock.com has great, inexpensive options).

UNIVERSITY CAREER CLOSETS. Events like Career Closets are happening all the time around college campuses. These events are usually sponsored by local churches, stores, or even the Career Services offices on campus. The clothes are free and there are lots of options, but you may have to wake up a bit early to beat the crowds! Keep checking the UTK Career Services website for events like these.
