Student Success Stories

This week’s success story: Ashley Fontenot

What CCD resources have you used that may have led to an internship, co-op, or part/full - time job opportunity?

Hire-a-Vol
Career Consultation
BUAD: 320
Erin Bennett
Mary Mahoney
Danny Pape

How have these resources prepared you for the internship, co-op, or part/full - time search process?

Freshman year I needed a part-time job, and I found that job through Hire-A-Vol. Through BUAD: 320 with Erin, I chose my major - Public Relations. After almost a year with my first job, they had to cut the secretary position. They gave me a two-week notice, and within that I found a job at 21st Mortgage. I was promoted to Social Media Coordinator there, and after a year and three months, I needed more experience in PR, so I attended the Communications Job Fair and met Sophie with Ackermann PR. I have held an intern position with them for two semesters. Within that time, I spoke with Mary Mahoney about working in Athletics and she connected me with my now boss.

What organization have you worked for or will you be working for and where?

During college, I've worked for Smee+Busby Architects downtown in Market Square, 21st Mortgage also downtown - two blocks from market square, Ackermann PR off of Northshore, and the athletic department.

What was your most enjoyable experience or what are most you looking forward to?

I can't say that I've had one amazing experience. I think all of my experiences have led me to where I am today. I still haven't chosen the industry I want to work in, but I definitely have options because of all the experience I have. Pretty much any success in job hunting I've had, the Center for Career Development has had a huge part. The most enjoyable people I've met are Erin and Mary. They've been two beacons of light in my professional journey.

Keep up the great work, Ashley!

Don't Dig Yourself Into a Hole Later...Get Smart About Your Money Now!

Considering that we come to college to receive a degree that can hopefully snag us a good job with
good pay upon graduation, don’t you think it’s a bit ironic that most college students leave with more debt than they can afford to pay off upon graduation? For those of us that had to take out student loans or even have to pay mom and dad back for sending us to school, the pressure becomes real when we start seeing how much money we are entitled to pay back once we graduate. But we are here to tell you that there is hope! You don’t have to be hopelessly indebted because of college for the next year of your life. Reap the benefits of working hard in school all these years and graduate debt-free or at least as close to it as you can get. Here are a few articles that can elaborate a bit more on student debt and how to come out with less of a burden and more financially free and stable. Check them out!

How to Find On-Campus Jobs

Are you a student looking for a part-time job on campus?  If so, then you are in the right place! There are a couple of ways to find on campus jobs including the Hire-A-Vol system which is always our go-to for job and interview searches.  As great as Hire-A-Vol is, not all campus jobs are listed on there.  Because of this, we also recommend looking for jobs the old fashioned way--walk in, introduce yourself, and ask if they're hiring!

Below are some great places on campus to begin your job hunt:

Positions in which students work involve the Sweet Shop, Post Office, Central Ticket Office, Ucopy, Administrative Offices, and the UC Down Under. All resumes must be submitted online, and all applications only become available on the website when a job opportunity is available. You can follow the job postings from the UC on Facebook, Twitter, or on the UC listserv. The link to the application website: universitycenter.utk.edu/studentemployment/
