Considering that we come to college to receive a degree that can hopefully snag us a good job with
good pay upon graduation, don’t you think it’s a bit ironic that most college students leave with more debt than they can afford to pay off upon graduation? For those of us that had to take out student loans or even have to pay mom and dad back for sending us to school, the pressure becomes real when we start seeing how much money we are entitled to pay back once we graduate. But we are here to tell you that there is hope! You don’t have to be hopelessly indebted because of college for the next year of your life. Reap the benefits of working hard in school all these years and graduate debt-free or at least as close to it as you can get. 3 Tips to Prevent Burnout

To begin, one must know the difference between burnout and stress. Stress causes a loss of energy, anxiety, and can even cause damage to your body. Burnout, on the other hand, causes disengagement, depression, and loss of motivation. In other words, stress is being anxious about the ten page essay you have due at 8am, and burnout is not being able to make yourself do the essay although it may be worth 50% of your grade. Below are 3 tips that may put the pep back into your step and onto the pathway to success!

Get active!

Go for a walk, run, lift weights, or do Zumba! Becoming physically active releases hormones that make you feel 10 times better than sitting on the couch with massive amounts of popcorn and Harry Potter. In addition, physical fitness classes allow those in a fog to be surrounded by people who are upbeat and energizing; thus potentially brightening your mood! When the body is healthy, the mind can become clear and focused…on the ten page essay of course.

     Get help!

The Student Success Center is an amazing resource that will not only help you get your goals back on track, but will also help you step by step by offering tutoring, academic coaching, success workshops, and supplemental instruction sessions in some of those “weed-out courses”. Visit their website or stop in and make an appointment in order to get your priorities on paper and specify your goals.

     Give back!

Sometimes giving back to your community will make your viewpoints change instantly. As students we tend to forget how fortunate we are to have the opportunity to earn an education. By volunteering, we are given the chance to not only help those in need, but also realize how silly being “burned out” really is.

What's Your Purpose: Nonprofit Organizations

Being college students, we often ask ourselves the question, “What is my purpose?” We seek our placement in the world and try our hardest to find where we can make a difference. We may not be Gandhi, Mother Teresa, or Martin Luther King Jr, but we all have great purposes too! One place that workers can impact the world is by working for nonprofit organizations, such as UNICEF.

UNICEF is a nonprofit organization that gives its all to help improve the standard of living for children in over 190 countries. They provide food, immunizations, and education for children in order to assure that they have the resources to grow into healthy and productive adults. In addition, they also provide immunizations as well as sterile ways to prevent the spreading of AIDS and the Ebola virus.

“But what if I don’t want to work for a nonprofit?”

There are many ways to leave your mark and give back to the community through volunteer work.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee organization is constantly looking for volunteers to match with their children. Unfortunately, only 3 out of 10 volunteers are men. Big Brothers Big Sisters is in desperate need for male volunteers that want to dedicate their time to changing a child’s life. Moreover, most of the children waiting to be matched are searching for African American and Hispanic men. 80% of the children surveyed reported that their Bigs positively impacted their lives and made them look at life differently. In addition, 46% are less likely to begin using drugs, 27% are less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52% are less likely to skip school.  Below is a link to their website. There, you can read real experiences and sign up to become a volunteer.

From experience, finding your purpose can be extremely difficult. It may seem impossible for some, but there are so many opportunities that allow individuals to make differences and touch lives.

Why wait? Sign up today and begin changing the world!
